What a buyer checks on your website before they call you

Before a buyer calls you or asks for a quote, they look you up to check that you are real, current and capable. They look for signs of life, facts that match what they were told, a page that works on their phone, and a way to reach you. If your site fails one of those, it can lose you the call.

What does a buyer check before they call you?

Watch from 0:00

Someone gave a buyer your name. Before they call you or ask for a quote, they look you up to check that you are real, current and capable.

They look for signs of life, facts that match what they heard, a page that works on their phone, and a way to reach you. If your site fails one of those, it can lose you the call.

Are you still in business?

Watch from 0:20

The first question is whether you are still trading. An old notice still at the top of the page, a copyright year from five years ago, or a news section that stopped in 2020 all say nobody is minding this. Dates are the cheapest thing to fix, so start there.

Do the facts match what they were told?

Watch from 0:37

Next, the buyer checks your facts against what they heard. What you make, the sizes and grades, your certifications, the plants or clients you supply, your address. Get those facts exactly right. A credential that is out of date or overstated can do more harm than a plain design.

Does it work on their phone?

Watch from 0:56

Then their phone, because the look-up may happen there, between meetings or on a shop floor. The menu should open, the text should be readable without zooming, and nothing should slide sideways. Open your own site on your phone today and you will see what they see.

Can they reach you?

Watch from 1:12

Last, they look for a way to reach you that works. A phone number they can tap, an email address that still gets answered, and a contact form that tells them their message went through.

A form that thanks them for a message that went nowhere can cost you a buyer, and you may never find out. So send your own form a test message today, and see where it lands.

Do you look like a company that delivers?

Watch from 1:33

Put together, the buyer is asking one thing: does this look like a company that can deliver? A clever design matters less to them than whether your site is current, correct and credible. Read your homepage as a stranger would and ask that same question.
