Your website brings no enquiries: what to check first

Check three things, in this order. First, see whether people reach your site at all. Google Search Console, a free Google tool, shows how often your site turns up in Google and how often someone clicks. Second, open your site on your own phone and try to call or message yourself. Your number should be easy to find and tap. Third, send yourself a message through your contact form and see where it lands. A form can say thank you while the message goes to spam. Fix whichever step fails first, before you pay for a new site, SEO or ads.

Is anyone reaching your website?

Start with Google Search Console, Google's free tool for site owners. You, or whoever holds your site's accounts, add your site and confirm it is yours. Its Performance report lists the searches your site appeared for and how many times someone clicked through to it from Google. If your site barely appears, the problem is being found. Appearing with few clicks points to how your site shows in the results. Clicks with no calls or messages point to your pages. Now you know which problem to spend on.

Try to contact yourself from your phone

Google judges your site by its phone version, and a stranger has only your pages to go on. So pick up your own phone and look at your site as someone who has never heard of you. Every snag you hit is one your customers hit too.

  • From the first screen of your home page, find your phone number without scrolling far
  • Tap the number. If it is plain text or part of a picture, a visitor has to copy it by hand
  • If your customers use WhatsApp, tap your WhatsApp button and check it opens a chat with the right number
  • Check the email address and phone number on your site are ones you still answer
  • Send yourself a message through your contact form, from your phone, and see whether it arrives, and where

Make sure your messages arrive

A contact form can show a visitor "thank you" and still lose their message. Gmail's sender guidelines say email that is not authenticated with records such as SPF and DKIM "might be marked as spam or rejected". If your form sends without them, an enquiry can land in spam or never arrive, and you never hear of it. Messages can also go to an old inbox. Ask whoever runs your site where form messages go, and whether SPF, DKIM and DMARC are set up. Then you know your enquiries reach you.

Make the next step obvious on every page

A page that only describes your business leaves the visitor to work out how to start. Someone ready to call you has to hunt for the way in. Give every page one clear next step, so a visitor who wants your help can ask for it from whichever page she is on.

  • Put your phone number, and WhatsApp if you use it, on every page, where a phone user sees it first
  • Tell visitors on each page what to do next, in one step: call, message, book or ask for a price
  • Answer on your pages the questions customers ask you on the phone before they buy: what it costs, where you are and which areas you serve, your hours, how long things take. A visitor who finds the answer is closer to getting in touch, and an AI assistant can quote it

Know which enquiries came from your website

Ask every new customer how they found you, and write it down. It costs nothing, and over time it shows which enquiries your site brought. Google Analytics can also record each sent form as an event called "form_submit". You can mark that as a key event, one of the actions that matter most to your business. Set up properly, it shows how many visits ended in a sent form. With both, you can tell whether a change to your site made a difference.

When your website is not the problem

Sometimes a better website will not help. If few people search for what you do in your area, a new site cannot create that demand. Its job is then to show you are real and make the call easy when a referral looks you up. If referrals keep you fully booked, your site may only need to be right, current and easy to contact. If Search Console shows almost nobody finds your site, work on your Google listing, your reviews and the questions on your pages. A new design alone will not change that. Either way, you spend on the problem you have.

Where InkySites fits

InkySites builds a fresh version of your site from its public pages and emails it within 48 hours, free, no card. It has a contact form, call buttons and, where we know your number, a WhatsApp button. Each form message goes to up to three addresses and stays in your dashboard, so one in spam is still there. Once we host your site, the dashboard counts taps to call, WhatsApp or email you over 30 days. We do not run your ads. If you like it, it is $29 a month, and you can take your web address and code back any time. You get a site you can test, with your form messages kept on record.

Questions people ask.

Why does my website get no enquiries when it looks fine?

A site can look good and still fail at one of three steps. People may not find it in Google. Visitors on a phone may not see how to call or message you. Form messages may land in spam or in an inbox nobody checks. Google Search Console, Google's free tool for site owners, shows whether you are being found. Testing your own site from your phone shows the other two. Then you know which step to fix.

How do I check whether my website's contact form works?

Open your website on your phone and send yourself a message through the form. Then check your inbox and your spam folder. If it lands in spam or never arrives, ask whoever runs your site whether the sending address has SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. Gmail says unauthenticated messages "might be marked as spam or rejected". The visitor sees "thank you" either way, so this test is how you find out.

Do I need a new website to get enquiries?

Not always. First find which step fails. If almost nobody finds your site in Google, work on your Google listing, your reviews and answering customers' questions on your pages. A new design alone will not fix that. If you are fully booked through referrals, your site may only need to be correct and easy to contact. A new site is worth it when people reach your site and cannot see how to get in touch.

How can I tell which enquiries came from my website?

Ask every new customer how they found you, and note the answer. It costs nothing and shows which enquiries your site brought. Google Analytics can add a count. It can record each sent contact form as an event ("form_submit"), which you can mark as a key event. Set up properly, it tells you how many visits ended in a sent form. Together they show whether your website brings you work.

What does the free InkySites site check look at?

The free site check on inkysites.com looks at your site's upkeep. It shows Google's own verdict on your site's speed on a phone, pass or needs work, and whether Google and AI tools can read your site. It needs no email. It reads only what any visitor could see, changes nothing on your site, and nobody contacts you because you ran it. It does not test your contact form or phone number, so test those from your phone.
